The African history graduate program explores pre-colonial, colonial, and post-colonial eras across sub-Saharan Africa. The curriculum has two stages: in the initial phase (years one through early three), students take diverse courses in their main and secondary fields, formulate dissertation proposals, fulfill language requirements, seek research grants, start teaching training, prepare for oral examinations, and draft dissertation proposals. The subsequent phase, typically starting in year three, involves conducting field research in Africa, fulfilling teaching duties, and completing dissertation writing and defense.
