The History Graduate Program at UCI provides students with a vibrant intellectual environment characterized by its dedication to interdisciplinary discussions between faculty and students. These conversations focus on key research areas including: Transnational, colonial, and imperial studies; Global History; The history of science, technology, medicine, and the environment; Gender and sexuality studies; and Religious history. Through graduate seminars, students from diverse geographical and historical specialties come together to explore a unique educational approach that blends theoretical rigor with detailed analysis of primary sources like documents, texts, interviews, and artifacts. The UCI History Department maintains an ideal balance—small enough for personalized attention yet sufficiently robust to foster a dynamic research culture. Students benefit from the department's strong focus on public-facing writing, its initiatives in history education and K-12 outreach through the UC Irvine History Project, and its expanding digital humanities expertise. Additionally, students can enhance their studies by engaging with interdisciplinary programs across campus, such as Critical Theory, East Asian Studies, and Gender and Sexuality Studies. Qualification Requirements
The Department of History requires the submission of the following materials in order to complete your application to the MA or PhD program. All materials must be received by the application deadline, including letters of recommendation.
1. No GRE score required
2. Transcripts (Electronic Submission)
For application review purposes only, scan and upload copies of transcripts for all institutions attended since high school. In the online application, you will be prompted to upload your scanned documents. Please upload both the front and back sides of the transcript. Uploaded transcripts should be recent and include the following: your name, dates of attendance, grades/marks received, credits and grading legend. UCI reserves the right to require official transcripts at any time during the admission process, and rescind any offer of admission made if discrepancies between uploaded and official transcript(s) are found. Official transcripts will be requested if and when you are admitted and decide to attend UCI. Do not send official transcripts until this time, unless you are requested to do so. IELTS - An overall minimum score of 7.0 for admission, with a score of no less than 6.0 on any individual module.
Hold a bachelor's degree (or equivalent) from a recognized academic institution with degree standards equivalent to those of the University of California
Have a minimum cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.0
