The Department provides a Ph.D. program in East Asian Studies, offering specializations in Chinese, Japanese, and East Asian Cultural Studies. Students working toward their doctorate may also earn an M.A. degree along the way.
The graduate program focuses on intensive language training and textual analysis while equally emphasizing historical, social, and cultural aspects of literary studies. Alongside traditional critical approaches, the curriculum promotes engagement with contemporary challenges to conventional methodologies. The program leverages faculty expertise in Chinese, Japanese, and Korean literature and culture while fostering connections with UCI's broader academic community.
Designed to equip students for both academic teaching and research careers, the program requires all participants to gain teaching experience by assisting in undergraduate courses under faculty guidance.
Students selecting this specialization complete five courses covering translation theory, practical translation work, and their chosen focus area: 1 Theories of Translation seminar, 3 translation workshops (including 2 standard workshops and 1 independent study), and 1 course tailored to their selected literature and field. Participants will work with languages in which the advising faculty have expertise.
