The Department provides a Ph.D. program focused on East Asian Studies, offering concentrations in Chinese, Japanese, and East Asian Cultural Studies. Students pursuing the doctoral degree may also earn an M.A. en route.
The graduate curriculum prioritizes intensive language and textual analysis training while equally emphasizing historical, social, and cultural aspects of literary research. Alongside conventional critical approaches, the program fosters examination of contemporary challenges to established theoretical and methodological paradigms. This academic initiative leverages faculty expertise addressing key topics in Chinese, Japanese, and Korean literature and culture, while forging connections with UCI's broader scholarly community.
Beyond coursework requirements, students must include at least one core faculty member from Asian American Studies on their qualifying examination committee. Affiliated faculty may substitute for core faculty members, pending approval from both the Asian American Studies Department Chair and Director of Graduate Study.
