The University of California, Irvine's Anthropology Ph.D. program specializes in social and cultural anthropology. Students typically undertake extended independent fieldwork, frequently overseas and sometimes in non-English languages, with support from external grants. While honoring anthropology's historical foundations and conventional research subjects, our program encourages innovative thinking that expands disciplinary boundaries through ethnographic exploration.
Our department offers exceptional theoretical and methodological training, with particular focus on modernity studies, political/legal/economic anthropology, ethnographic techniques, and science/technology/medicine research. Doctoral candidates can pursue interdisciplinary graduate emphases in fields like feminist studies, critical theory, and visual studies. We cultivate creative anthropological approaches within an inclusive academic setting, where faculty employ varied theoretical perspectives while collectively challenging established frameworks through intellectual exchange.
