The University of Maryland's Anthropology Department provides graduate programs culminating in several degrees: the Master of Applied Anthropology (M.A.A.), a dual Master of Applied Anthropology and Master of Historic Preservation (M.A.A./M.H.P.), a Masters of Professional Studies in Cultural and Heritage Resource Management (M.P.S. (CHRM)), and a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.). These programs embody the department's commitment to applied anthropology—the practical implementation of anthropological theories and methods across diverse institutional and community contexts. Faculty members specialize in two core subfields (archaeology and socio-cultural anthropology) while maintaining interdisciplinary approaches that bridge these areas. The department has established three key research focuses: Health Anthropology, Environmental Anthropology, and Heritage Anthropology. These domains encompass research questions aligned with faculty expertise, which can be explored through either subfield individually or through collaborative interdisciplinary efforts.
The Ph.D. program emphasizes advancing research scholarship while refining anthropological practices through theoretical and methodological innovation. Doctoral candidates develop skills for both academic careers in anthropology departments and research-oriented positions beyond academia.
Those applicants who have earned or will earn a bachelor's degree at a regionally accredited college or university in the United States (or the equivalent of a baccalaureate degree from a nationally recognized institution in another country) are eligible to be considered for admission to the Graduate School at the University of Maryland
