The Developmental and Cell Biology program offers students comprehensive education in advanced techniques for studying cellular structures, functions, and their interactions in organism development from fertilization onward. This bachelor's degree program emphasizes rigorous preparation for graduate studies in Developmental and Cell Biology or related biomedical fields. Students gain thorough knowledge of molecular cell and developmental biology, combined with insights from recent genomic breakthroughs, equipping them with problem-solving skills for fundamental research.
This major stands out in several ways. First, it minimizes required courses, enabling deeper specialization in Developmental and Cell Biology. Second, it introduces a novel Genomic and Proteomic analysis course directly linked to genetics, developmental, and cellular biology challenges. Grasping these interdisciplinary connections and mastering relevant research methodologies is essential for biomedical research success. Another unique aspect allows students to substitute two advanced lab courses with faculty-mentored BIO SCI 199 research projects, applying classroom knowledge to cutting-edge investigations. Additionally, Developmental and Cell Biology majors receive quarterly guidance from faculty advisors who assist with course planning, research project selection, and degree requirements. Through specialized upper-division coursework, curriculum flexibility, research opportunities, and faculty mentorship, students cultivate research understanding and build a solid foundation for graduate or professional education.
Student must have completed secondary school with excellent grades/marks in academic subjects and have earned a certificate of completion that enables you to be admitted to a university in your home country and is equivalent to a U.S. high school diploma. If your secondary/high school was completed in a country where English was not the language of instruction, or if you have less than three years of high school curriculum instruction in English in the U.S., you are required to demonstrate English proficiency.
Various examinations and scores may be used to demonstrate proficiency in English: Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) examination: Internet-based test (IBT): score 80 or higher; Score 6.5 or higher on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS); Freshman applicants may complete one UC approved English composition course.
