Molecular and cellular biology explores the essential mechanisms underlying biological life and the methods employed to investigate these systems. This field provides foundational knowledge applicable to numerous disciplines such as genetics, developmental studies, physiology, microbiology, and evolutionary science. The MCB program aims to equip graduates for success in graduate studies, biomedical professional programs, clinical laboratory sciences, or careers in government and industry research laboratories focused on biomedical and agricultural sciences.
Students must work with their designated biology faculty advisor to finalize their BS program and elective selections, which require departmental approval two quarters before graduation. Every BS biology student must fulfill all core requirements along with additional specialized coursework. Students must also select a designated number of upper-division courses from various categories. The major allows up to 15 credits from BIOL 295, BIOL 490, BIOL 495, and BIOL 496. Note that introductory biology courses and those designed for non-majors cannot count toward Biology BS, BA, or minor requirements. Consult course descriptions for specifics, and ensure all elective choices receive departmental approval.
