Sociology examines the dynamics of human relationships, investigating how social patterns influence behavior and how group conflicts and collaborations drive structural changes in society. Introductory courses provide sociology majors with foundational concepts, methodologies, and key discoveries in the field, while lower-division courses delve into core subfields, and upper-division offerings allow for focused specialization.
This discipline analyzes societies and human collectives, exploring themes like social conflict, cooperation, inequality, and the organization of families, communities, workplaces, and nations. UCI's program offers a comprehensive overview of sociology while enabling students to engage in independent research, join an Honors Program, and explore departmental focus areas such as business, economy and organizations, diversity and inequality, global and international sociology, and social issues and public policy. Core coursework includes studies on social institutions, theory, and research methods, followed by specialized classes in areas like race and ethnicity, social psychology, gender studies, or political sociology. Faculty research enhances these courses, covering topics such as immigrant work and family life in the U.S., economic shifts in Asia, gender dynamics across social classes and ethnic groups, and perspectives on sexual behavior. Exceptional sociology majors may participate in the Honors Program during their junior or senior year.
