LGBTQ studies is the scholarly exploration of sexuality across traditional academic domains including literature, history, theater, legal studies, medicine, economics, sociology, anthropology, and political science. This field critically analyzes queer historical narratives, the dynamics of sexual marginalization and liberation, connections between sexual identity and representation in creative arts, and the role of queerness in personal identity formation. Inherently cross-disciplinary, LGBTQ studies pushes students to synthesize knowledge from multiple fields to grasp sexuality's societal significance.
The University of Colorado Boulder's Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer (LGBTQ) studies program spans over 20 courses across twelve departments, covering subjects from literature to political science. This interdisciplinary curriculum blends sophisticated theoretical frameworks with sexuality research. Through certificate programs and faculty mentorship, students can combine diverse humanities, social science, and natural science courses to enhance their comprehension of cultural systems and connect academic insights to real-world experiences.
