The two-year MFA in Design program fosters interdisciplinary exploration, combining research and practice with a focus on social and environmental stewardship. Our graduate students collaborate with distinguished design faculty at a leading public research university, benefiting from full funding opportunities via Teaching Assistant (TA) and Graduate Student Researcher (GSR) roles. They engage with experts across the Design Department and university-wide, spanning specialties like design theory, exhibition, fashion, history, information design, interactivity, interior architecture, immersive experiences, lighting, product development, textiles, time-based media, visual communication, and wearable technology. The program actively promotes cross-campus partnerships, connecting students with faculty in arts, humanities, social sciences, politics, biological sciences, agriculture, and professional fields like medicine, law, and veterinary studies.
Specializing in textiles during UC Davis' MFA program equips graduates for diverse career paths in academia, industry, NGOs, and entrepreneurial endeavors. As textiles permeate material culture and intersect with fashion, interior architecture, lighting design, industrial design, and interactive media, students are urged to pursue interdisciplinary projects. The program emphasizes textile design research and practice, prioritizing innovation, artistic expression, and solution-driven approaches.
