Welcome to LSU's Graduate Program in Textiles, Apparel Design, and Merchandising. Each graduate program's specific requirements and procedures are outlined in the Handbook, which serves as a supplement to the LSU General Catalog. The Catalog remains the official source for all academic policies at the University. Graduate students must ensure they meet all requirements specified in both the current LSU General Catalog and these Guidelines. Additionally, students should stay informed about and adhere to all deadlines listed in the Graduate Calendar. While the Catalog notes that LSU may modify requirements at any time, TAM generally follows the regulations in place when students begin their programs.
Textile scientists explore natural and synthetic organic polymers in textile materials, along with developing sustainable composites from plant-based polymers and fibers. The historical and cultural importance of textiles and apparel is equally significant. The department is home to the LSU Textile and Costume Museum, featuring a worldwide collection that spans prehistoric and ethnic textiles, contemporary fashion, and advanced technical textiles. The museum plays a key role in supporting faculty and student research and education. Its special collections safeguard important elements of local, state, and regional heritage, including LSU's own history through various artifacts. The Louisiana collection highlights Native American and Acadian textiles, gubernatorial inaugural attire, Katrina recovery clothing from the Red Cross, and post-WWII feed sack garments. The university has recently expanded the museum's facilities, offering a larger public exhibition space with its own dedicated entrance.
