The Ph.D. program offers comprehensive coursework in modern statistical theory and allows for specialization in applied statistical fields. This Plan A program culminates in a final oral examination (dissertation defense). Typically during their second or third year, Ph.D. candidates select a specialization area and choose a major professor/dissertation advisor. Students collaborate with the faculty Graduate Advisor to design their study plan. The Statistics Graduate Program (GPS) involves twenty-six faculty members from various campus departments. Our graduate curriculum emphasizes that effective applications stem from robust theoretical and methodological foundations. All statistics graduate students complete core courses in mathematical statistics, applied statistics, and multivariate analysis. The program includes computational statistics training and offers diverse special topics courses.
An undergraduate major in mathematics or statistics is typical for statistics graduate students, but is not required. However, because of the mathematical nature of some of the graduate coursework, students should be able to demonstrate good mathematical ability. The minimal background for entrance into the Ph.D. program is: a bachelor's degree with 3.0 overall grade point average; facility with a programming language; and upper division work in mathematics and/or statistics.
