The statistics PhD program prepares students for research careers in academia, government, or private sector. The rigorous curriculum delivers comprehensive training in statistical theory, computational methods, and practical applications. Students initiate research projects during their first year and undertake internships (either on-campus or external) in their second year. This approach equips graduates with the expertise needed for positions as faculty members, lead statisticians, or senior data scientists. Although research begins immediately, formal dissertation work commences after passing preliminary exams. Dissertation topics may focus on applied statistics, computational techniques, theoretical statistics, or probability theory. The dissertation process generally requires 1-2 years to finish and defend, with work expected to meet publication standards in respected journals. Most PhD candidates complete the program within five years.
