Plant Biology offers a distinctive chance to engage in a research discipline that bridges both practical applications and foundational scientific inquiry. The study of plants stands out because the knowledge gained can directly contribute to addressing global food security challenges. At the same time, this field equips students with the skills needed for careers in fundamental research, as plant science has driven many key breakthroughs in biology over the last hundred years. Earning a Ph.D. in Plant Biology enables students to explore a wide array of research areas, from ecosystem dynamics to molecular processes, utilizing diverse methodologies such as genetics, biochemistry, computational modeling, systems biology, and advanced quantitative analysis.
The Plant Biology Graduate Group at UC Davis delivers interdisciplinary education in plant science. Its vertically integrated research structure empowers students to investigate plants across multiple scales, from molecular interactions to population-level studies. While the primary emphasis is on fundamental research, the vibrant plant science community on campus also provides avenues for engaging in applied research projects. The program ensures outstanding training opportunities in several ways. UC Davis is globally renowned for its plant science expertise, with researchers spread across various departments. As an interdepartmental initiative, the Plant Biology Graduate Group allows students to tap into the full breadth of plant biology knowledge on campus and learn from faculty members in any department.
