The Graduate Group in Microbiology provides a Doctor of Philosophy program focused on microbiology. This Ph.D. curriculum integrates scholarly education with hands-on training in contemporary molecular techniques for addressing microbiological challenges. While completion times vary by individual, most students finish within approximately 5 years. The program's objective is for each graduate to produce a dissertation offering novel insights to the field of microbiology. Throughout this journey, the group aims to equip students with the expertise and foundational understanding needed to pursue careers as independent researchers across academic, industrial, healthcare, or governmental sectors.

The Designated Emphasis in the Biology of Vector-borne Diseases concentrates on the scientific examination of pathogens, their associated illnesses, and the arthropod vectors responsible for transmitting these pathogens to plants, animals, and humans. Graduates from this DE program will be exceptionally prepared to develop, execute, and assess strategies for preventing and managing pathogens with significant agricultural, veterinary, and medical impacts.
