The program provides extensive studies in German language, literature, cultural studies, philosophy, theory, media analysis, and cinema, covering all eras from medieval times to contemporary periods. Its renowned faculty specialize in diverse fields including literary history, gender studies, critical theory, film analysis, intellectual history, and linguistics. Degree candidates have the opportunity to pair their German Ph.D. with interdisciplinary focuses such as critical theory, classics, feminist scholarship, and second language acquisition. The challenging yet adaptable M.A. and Ph.D. curricula allow for concentrated study of theoretical and historical aspects of German literature and philosophy, alongside a linguistics-focused pathway.
The Feminist Theory and Research Designated Emphasis enables graduate students in related programs to enhance their doctoral studies with specialized feminist scholarship. Qualified students in good academic standing may enroll in these designated courses. Upon fulfilling the requirements, participants will have this specialization reflected on their academic records, with their Ph.D. diplomas recognizing this additional training as a Special Emphasis in Feminist Theory and Research.
