The program focuses on combining fundamental and practical approaches to entomology to address challenges in biology, agriculture, and environmental science. Students can concentrate on various specialized fields including pest management strategies, economic insect studies, pollination science, chemical insect communication, insect sensory systems, population dynamics, insect physiology, pesticide science, ecological pest control, evolutionary biology, forensic insect analysis, disease-carrying insects, and insect classification. UC Davis offers exceptional research facilities to support diverse investigations. The Richard M. Bohart Museum of Entomology maintains comprehensive insect specimens from California and global locations, while the Harry H. Laidlaw Jr. Honey Bee Research Center provides dedicated spaces and labs for both theoretical and practical research on honeybees and wild pollinators. The department features cutting-edge laboratory facilities and advanced equipment, including climate-controlled growth rooms, experimental farm plots, and greenhouse spaces for student research.
The Biotechnology specialization offers a robust interdisciplinary program covering biotech ethics, commercial considerations, legal frameworks, plus a 3-6 month practical placement in biotech firms or research institutions. Dr. Kjelstrom, the Program Director, supports students with internship placements, crafting compelling application materials, and cultivating professional competencies for corporate settings.
