Nutrition researchers analyze food components that could unlock secrets to extended, healthier lifespans. Those pursuing this field also explore food accessibility and safety in developing regions. Professionals in nutrition work across diverse environments including research labs, food corporations, healthcare systems, public health agencies, educational initiatives, and policy development. They also guide individuals toward healthier eating habits to manage and possibly avert prevalent illnesses. The curriculum starts with fundamental classes in natural sciences (emphasizing biology and chemistry), social sciences, mathematics, and core nutrition principles. Advanced studies allow specialization in either nutritional biology or public health nutrition, delving deeper into biological sciences and concentration-specific subjects. Clinical nutrition majors can pursue accreditation through the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, leading to Registered Dietitian certification for clinical roles. Public health nutrition students focus on social and health sciences while developing skills to communicate nutritional concepts in community settings.
At UC Davis, nutrition is approached as a biological science demanding thorough chemistry and biology preparation, plus calculus and physics (for nutritional biology) or economics (for public health nutrition). These prerequisites, along with biochemistry, must be fulfilled before advanced nutrition coursework. Upperclassmen in nutritional biology study biochemistry, physiology, and toxicology in depth, while public health nutrition students concentrate on social and health sciences.
