Marine scientists utilize expertise in natural and physical sciences to safeguard oceanic and coastal ecosystems while addressing contemporary worldwide challenges. Over 96% of Earth's water resides in our oceans, with nearly all coastlines experiencing human impacts. The coastal environmental processes specialization focuses on coastal zone ecosystems and their intricate physical-biological relationships, while the marine environmental chemistry track explores key aspects of marine chemistry, geochemistry, carbon cycling, and pollutant behavior. Foundational studies in mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology, and earth sciences prepare students for marine science core curriculum. The coastal processes specialization offers advanced coursework examining the vital land-sea interface and essential coastal physical dynamics. The chemistry track includes rigorous studies in chemical sciences, environmental toxicology, engineering disciplines, hydrology, and conservation biology, culminating in a research-based capstone course.
This program introduces students to core marine science disciplines (biology, chemistry, geology, physics) alongside pressing marine and coastal concerns like climate change, contamination, carbon dynamics, and ecosystem preservation. Fieldwork, independent research or internships, and a culminating capstone course showcasing modern marine research are required. These comprehensive experiences challenge students to integrate the multidisciplinary knowledge gained throughout their studies.
Freshman applicant will be completing or have completed secondary school and have not enrolled at any college or university.
