Cell biology combines knowledge from various fields such as chemistry, physics, genetics, biochemistry, and physiology to provide a comprehensive understanding of cellular processes. This program creates pathways for scientific discovery in cellular and molecular research. Students start with core courses shared across biological science majors, covering fundamental concepts in natural sciences and mathematics. Advanced coursework delves into organic and physical chemistry along with developmental, molecular, and cellular biology. With its strong research orientation, the program exposes students to contemporary experimental biology and encourages collaborative faculty research projects to complement academic learning.
Since cells form the basis of all living organisms, cell biology serves as the cornerstone of biological sciences. This major equips students with a robust understanding of biological fundamentals, highlighting how cellular structure and function influence organismal development, maintenance, and reproduction. It demonstrates how principles from physical sciences, genetics, biochemistry, molecular biology, and physiology converge in cellular studies, while emphasizing the experimental approach to biological investigation.
This program offers ideal preparation for students pursuing graduate studies or professional degrees in biological and health sciences, including veterinary medicine. It also serves those aiming for careers in biological research, education, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, or biomedical-related administrative, legal, and commercial fields.
Freshman applicant will be completing or have completed secondary school and have not enrolled at any college or university.
