Students pursuing a French major develop proficiency in four key language areas: speaking, listening, reading, and writing in French. The program explores France's vibrant intellectual traditions, literary works, and cultural heritage from medieval times to the contemporary era, with courses covering literature, cultural studies, film, and linguistics. The first two years focus on foundational language training, encompassing reading, writing, oral communication, and comprehension, along with introductory linguistics and literary analysis. Advanced studies delve into diverse French literary genres across historical periods, allowing students to customize their path through electives in French history, art, and civilization, while honing practical abilities in advanced language and translation courses.
UC Davis French alumni have pursued diverse careers including foreign language instruction, medicine (as cardiologists and veterinarians), military leadership (like a Pentagon naval commander), academia (such as Political Science professors), legal practice, sales, journalism, speech pathology, law education, translation services, software development (senior applications programmers), travel consultancy, entrepreneurship, museum curation (senior curator roles), healthcare (nursing), finance (managers and stock brokers), and diplomatic trade positions (like an industrial attaché for French trade). These examples merely scratch the surface of career paths documented among department graduates holding a French A.B. degree.
Freshman applicant will be completing or have completed secondary school and have not enrolled at any college or university.
