The UC Berkeley–UCSF Joint Medical Program (JMP) is a five-year graduate medical education initiative. Participants complete their pre-clerkship training at UC Berkeley, following an innovative curriculum focused on student-driven learning while simultaneously obtaining a Master of Science (MS) in Health and Medical Sciences through Berkeley Public Health. After two and a half years, students transition to UCSF to complete their medical training and earn their Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree. As the nation's sole medical program based within a School of Public Health, the JMP integrates medical instruction within a broader public and community health context. The MS curriculum aligns with the program's mission to cultivate antiracist physicians and public health innovators by incorporating collaborative practice, systems analysis, and critical examination into conventional medical training. This approach equips students with the analytical, practical, and interpersonal competencies needed to drive meaningful improvements in individual and population health outcomes. Mirroring the JMP's overall philosophy, the master's program emphasizes transformative learning through inquiry-based experiences, challenging established paradigms, and fostering new perspectives developed through intensive reflection and personal engagement.
