The Hofstra Northwell School of Nursing and Physician Assistant Studies Cardiovascular Sciences and Perfusion Medicine Program focuses on training and guiding future cardiovascular perfusion specialists. Our mission is to cultivate highly proficient, capable leaders who will advance cardiovascular science and perfusion medicine. This 21-month program blends classroom instruction with hands-on clinical training, equipping students to earn both a Certificate in Perfusion Clinical Competence and a Master of Science Degree in Cardiovascular Sciences and Perfusion Medicine from Hofstra University.
The coursework incorporates advanced simulation techniques, digital learning tools, and expert-led classroom instruction to train students in critical perfusion skills. These include managing heart-lung bypass systems, gas exchange techniques, fluid balance, blood clotting control, and extracorporeal circulation methods for patients of all ages. Graduates will gain the expertise required to safely perform perfusion procedures alongside any cardiothoracic surgical or medical team. Hofstra University leverages the extensive resources of Northwell Health and its network of clinical partners in the New York metropolitan area, offering exposure to advanced cardiac care and innovative technologies. Beyond standard perfusion training, students will engage with complex aortic surgeries, pediatric cardiac cases, life support systems, ventricular assist devices, and emerging cardiovascular technologies. Our program combines academic instruction from cardiovascular specialists with top-tier clinical rotations to deliver an exceptional educational experience.
Program graduates will acquire the knowledge and skills to:
Choose appropriate perfusion equipment and methods for patients of all ages in collaboration with physicians.
