This program aims to deliver a comprehensive professional education with broader scope than typical offerings for students focused on urban land use, housing, or social policy issues. The planning coursework equips students with policy analysis skills and introduces theories and initiatives tackling urban development challenges. Legal studies further enhance analytical capabilities and provide essential knowledge for effective plan execution.

Students completing this dual degree program gain qualifications for diverse careers bridging law and urban planning. Potential roles include city attorneys, community development leaders, legislative committee staff, development managers, planning department heads, consulting planners, land use advisors, government agency staff, public interest advocates, and executive aides to elected officials. Program alumni have accessed remarkable career paths across these fields.
Through partnerships with Berkeley Law and UC Hastings College of Law, the Department of City & Regional Planning (DCRP) enables qualified candidates to earn both a Master of City Planning (MCP) and Juris Doctor (JD) in four years - one year less than pursuing the degrees separately.
