The department provides an accredited professional Master of Architecture (MArch), along with post-professional Master of Advanced Architectural Design (MAAD), Master of Science (MS), and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programs. Architects deliver services spanning the complete building lifecycle—from initial concepts to design, representation, craftsmanship, construction, and evaluating both physical and virtual environments. Embedded within the College of Environmental Design, Berkeley's Department of Architecture was established on principles of cross-disciplinary teamwork and a commitment to innovation. Its undergraduate curriculum encompasses design theory, architectural and urban history, sustainable building science, structural engineering, sociocultural influences, environmental design in developing regions, digital and virtual design, urban planning, and visual arts.

The Master of Architecture program offers a thorough and demanding education for students pursuing their first professional accreditation in architecture. Graduate candidates can tailor their studies across a flexible two-to-three-year curriculum, adjusted for prior academic and professional background. The department welcomes applicants from all undergraduate disciplines. Program duration, required coursework, and specific prerequisites may differ based on prior education, work experience, or graduate studies. The Master of Architecture Committee determines individual placement after reviewing each application.
