The Master of Fine Arts in painting program focuses on cultivating modern studio painting techniques. Students have opportunities to investigate various conceptual themes, including analyzing and reimagining Northern imagery, particularly in Circumpolar zones, examining cultural and regional identity topics, and exploring intersections between art and polar science. The University of Alaska Fairbanks fosters strong partnerships with scientific departments to pioneer innovative techniques that meaningfully bridge these disciplines—such as combining art with anthropology, geology, or neuroscience. The MFA program concludes with a comprehensive thesis exhibition and accompanying written document that thoroughly articulates the artistic concepts and methodologies presented. A public defense of the thesis project is also mandatory.
