The Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) program curriculum encompasses an extensive foundation of public health knowledge and related fields, along with research into critical public health challenges. Berkeley School of Public Health awards the DrPH degree to candidates who demonstrate mastery of public health principles and allied disciplines, as well as the capacity to design, execute, and lead impactful public health research and interventions. This degree emphasizes cultivating interdisciplinary understanding of health determinants while developing leadership competencies to transform knowledge into practical health solutions. The full-time, on-campus DrPH program typically spans three to four years for applicants holding an MPH from a CEPH-accredited school and possessing two or more years of post-graduate public health leadership experience. Students lacking coursework equivalent to UC Berkeley's MPH requirements must complete necessary prerequisites either prior to enrollment or during their initial program year.
The following minimum requirements apply to all graduate programs and will be verified by the Graduate Division:
Applicants Who Already Hold a Graduate Degree
The Graduate Council views academic degrees not as vocational training certificates, but as evidence of broad training in research methods, independent study, and articulation of learning. Therefore, applicants who already have academic graduate degrees should be able to pursue new subject matter at an advanced level without the need to enroll in a related or similar graduate program.
Applicants admitted to a doctoral program that requires a master’s degree to be earned at Berkeley as a prerequisite (even though the applicant already has a master’s degree from another institution in the same or a closely allied field of study) will be permitted to undertake the second master’s degree, despite the overlap in field.
