Epidemiology is the field that measures how exposures relate to disease development in human populations and explores ways to modify those risks through interventions. Epidemiological studies have frequently formed the foundation for crucial public health policies, including tobacco regulations, long before specific disease processes were fully comprehended. Our faculty and students participate in observational research, especially causal studies aimed at uncovering disease origins, as well as intervention trials focused on disease prevention. We've introduced new coursework covering field epidemiology, mental health epidemiology, injury epidemiology, tuberculosis epidemiology, molecular approaches in epidemiology, reproductive and perinatal health epidemiology, and the epidemiology of obesity and nutrition. Epidemiology combined with biostatistics forms the fundamental basis of public health practice, a principle strongly upheld at The Ohio State University.
