Berkeley Social Welfare's PhD program fosters creative thinking and intellectual autonomy in the quest for knowledge. Candidates develop customized study plans that reflect their academic passions while connecting with faculty expertise within the School of Social Welfare and other prestigious Berkeley departments. The program requires at least three years to finish (two for coursework and one for dissertation research), though many students take additional time. Social Welfare expects all doctoral candidates to earn their PhD within 10 semesters, completing qualifying exams by year three and submitting their dissertation by year five.
To be considered for admission to the Social Welfare PhD Program, all applicants must:
TOEFL at least 90 for the Internet-based test (IBT), and 570 for the paper-based format (PBT); Overall Band score must be at least 7 on a 9-point scale for IELTS
