Hemispheric & Transnational Studies examines cultural and historical connections across the Americas, investigating how research on Atlantic networks, border regions, and diasporic communities has transformed academic fields like American Studies, Caribbean Studies, and Latin American Studies, with a focus on imperialism, racial dynamics, and revolutionary movements.
A key objective of Hemispheric Studies is to investigate how the shift toward transnational perspectives influences academic research priorities. Students analyze how studies of transatlantic connections, borderlands, and migration patterns have redefined approaches to U.S. American Studies, Caribbean Studies, and Latin American scholarship. Specific concentration requirements vary based on the student's home department or program.
This interdisciplinary concentration is offered to graduate students in Applied Gender Studies, Cultural Studies, English, History, and Religion programs. Students earn this specialization alongside their MA or PhD degree, with the additional qualification appearing on their official academic transcripts.
