Our Food and Environment specialization examines how social structures and institutions shape human interactions with nature. This program combines two interconnected sociological disciplines: food systems sociology and environmental sociology. We study connections between individuals, organizational and market forces, and environmental/social transformations across local, national, and international scales.
Our investigations cover both traditional and innovative agricultural models, sustainability initiatives, activism among producers and consumers, cultural-political dynamics, factors influencing environmental decline and restoration, plus concerns regarding social disparities, food availability, and environmental equity. We urge graduate students to utilize diverse analytical perspectives when examining these topics, such as political economy, regulatory theories, supply chain analysis, intersectional approaches, social movement theories, and cultural methodologies. This comprehensive perspective offers a unified understanding of socio-environmental systems across various levels - from community to worldwide contexts, encompassing both public and private domains.
