Family sociologists examine how social structures and cultural environments shape families, and conversely, how families influence individual welfare. Researchers in this field investigate diverse subjects across adulthood, such as how family relationship quality affects mental health, physical wellness, and lifestyle choices; the effects of marriage and childbearing on women's social standing, health, and quality of life in sub-Saharan Africa; trends and outcomes of parental favoritism; elder care responsibilities; adult sibling dynamics; and how employment can either strengthen or strain family units.
This specialization focuses on cutting-edge family research theories and methodologies, employing quantitative, qualitative, and blended research techniques, while fostering close faculty-student partnerships to generate innovative academic work.
