The Graduate Group in Science and Mathematics Education (commonly called SESAME) provides an interdisciplinary doctoral program focused on science and mathematics education. This program prepares students with deep knowledge in both a scientific field and educational theory/research methods. SESAME was created to enable professionals with backgrounds in math, science, or technical fields to pursue advanced studies addressing educational challenges within these disciplines.
The minimum graduate admission requirements are: bachelor’s degree or recognized equivalent from an accredited institution; satisfactory scholastic average, usually a minimum grade-point average (GPA) of 3.0 (B) on a 4.0 scale; and enough undergraduate training to do graduate work in your chosen field.
Applicants admitted to a doctoral program that requires a master’s degree to be earned at Berkeley as a prerequisite (even though the applicant already has a master’s degree from another institution in the same or a closely allied field of study) will be permitted to undertake the second master’s degree, despite the overlap in field.
TOEFL at least 90 for the Internet-based test (IBT), and 570 for the paper-based format (PBT); Overall Band score must be at least 7 on a 9-point scale for IELTS
