Large-scale computing services focus on handling, sharing, and processing enormous amounts of data. For four decades, Berkeley has been at the forefront of understanding and developing data's crucial role in computing. Berkeley's researchers and students have consistently shaped the database field, merging profound academic influence with the creation of billion-dollar industries like relational databases, RAID storage, web search scalability, and big data analysis. The university also pioneered many popular open-source tools in this domain, such as INGRES, Postgres, BerkeleyDB, and Apache Spark. Currently, our research keeps expanding the horizons of data-driven computing, applying core data management principles to diverse new applications.
