The PhD program in Classics at Berkeley offers comprehensive training in classical scholarship while fostering independent intellectual exploration and original research tailored to each student's abilities and interests. Before advancing to dissertation candidacy, students must fulfill examination and coursework requirements that guarantee proficiency in essential areas including ancient and modern languages, history, literature, Greek and Roman cultures, scholarly methods, and critical analysis. The dissertation serves as proof of the candidate's capacity for autonomous, innovative research contributions.

The program also prepares graduates for professional academic roles. A UC Berkeley Classics PhD recipient should be qualified to teach introductory Greek or Latin courses, advanced courses in their language specialization, and graduate-level classes in at least one specialized language area or interdisciplinary topic. While this represents the baseline expectation, we actively promote scholarly growth beyond these minimum standards.
