Exploring urban environments plays a crucial role in liberal arts education. In our current era of worldwide transformation, this field of study holds exceptional significance. Humanity has become more urbanized than ever before, making cities essential hubs for economic growth, centers of civic engagement, and arenas for cultural creativity.
The Urban Studies program operates within the College of Environmental Design's Department of City and Regional Planning (DCRP). This major aims to expose students to several key areas of understanding:
The evolution and current state of urban development across America and worldwide, including urban societies and political-economic systems
Analytical approaches, conceptual models, and technical skills for studying urban spaces, ranging from economic evaluation to social theories and digital visualization
The structures, operations, and implementation of urban planning, metropolitan administration, activist movements, and equity initiatives - covering areas like transit systems, neighborhood revitalization, and residential policies
Methods for creating more compassionate, fair, sustainable, and functional communities while driving positive urban transformation
