The Urban Studies major examines cities, suburban areas, and metropolitan regions through an academic lens. This interdisciplinary program incorporates coursework from five UWM schools and eleven departments, spanning fields like Africology, Architecture, Criminal Justice, Educational Policy, Geography, History, Political Science, Nonprofit Management, Public Health, Sociology, and Urban Planning. Students can tailor the Urban Studies program to focus on their specific urban, suburban, or metropolitan interests while benefiting from diverse disciplinary viewpoints. The curriculum emphasizes comprehensive, historical, and worldwide perspectives on urban growth and transformation. Through four foundational courses, Urban Studies majors develop this broad understanding of urban environments.

Qualification Requirements

All applicants whose native language is not English must provide proof of English proficiency in one of the following ways:
An approved test score that meets the requirement for regular or conditional admission.
University study: Completion of at least 18 months of full-time, for-credit academic study (approximately three semesters) at a recognized or accredited institution of higher education whose language of instruction is English immediately prior to enrollment at UWM.
Secondary/high school study: Proof of completion of the last two years of secondary/high school at an institution whose language of instruction is English immediately prior to enrollment at UWM. TOEFL IBT - 79 or higher, TOEFL PBT - 548 or higher, IELTS - 6.5
