The MFA program unites artistic practice with design history while exploring visual culture's theoretical and historical dimensions. Faculty guide students in realizing their potential through deep discussions, experimentation with new methods and mediums, and creating thought-provoking work.
UB's MFA program aims to cultivate leaders equipped to navigate cultural production challenges, whether through professional studio work, cultural sector careers, or academic paths. Each graduate student enjoys private studio access and round-the-clock entry to all media labs. Our program features distinguished faculty, guest artists, and an innovative approach fostering interdisciplinary work within a major AAU research university.Curriculum includes critical theory, studio art classes, art history, and elective courses. Students tailor their graduate experience through critiques, presentations, readings, and dialogues with faculty and visiting artists.Graduate candidates work closely with a three-member faculty committee guiding their research and practice.The second year concludes with a thesis exhibition (or equivalent public presentation) and written thesis defense.This intensive 60-credit, two-year residential program demands full commitment, emphasizing strong work habits, personal artistic development, and creative exploration. All participants receive dedicated studio space and unlimited lab access. Program highlights include acclaimed faculty, visiting artists, and a forward-thinking ethos promoting cross-disciplinary collaboration at a premier AAU research university.

Qualification Requirements

When preparing the application and supporting documents, such as your statement of intent and portfolio, keep in mind that we are looking for students who we feel would be a good match for our program. There is no one measure that applies to all – we are looking for devoted makers and conceptual artists a like.

Complete the online application. Select Fine Arts (MFA) from the list.

Electronic transcripts should be uploaded with your application. You must supply transcripts from all colleges and universities that you have attended (unofficial copies are accepted). Official transcripts will be required if you are admitted and choose to matriculate at the University at Buffalo.

Three (3) confidential letters of recommendation from persons familiar with your academic or professional work. The references you select should be able to assess your level of maturity, intellectual capability, preparedness and motivation for graduate study.

Statement of intent: This should reveal the motivation for graduate study and provide insights about your work to date and where you feel it is going. This statement may discuss areas you are interested in researching further. Ideally your statement should communicate curiosity, intelligence, commitment, and demonstrate historical awareness of your field and your relationship to it. Feel free to include insights into your interdisciplinary interests, motivations, strengths and weaknesses, reasons for choosing our MFA program over others, as well as past accomplishments.
