Our adaptable Biomedical Engineering PhD program enables students to explore research opportunities across diverse fields including molecular, cellular and tissue engineering, biomedical devices, sensors, instrumentation and diagnostics, computational modeling, medical imaging and analysis, or in a specialized area of their choosing. The Biomedical Engineering department faculty, affiliated with both the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences and the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, guide students in developing essential knowledge and research capabilities to excel in academic or corporate research environments.
Applications are evaluated by the graduate committee on the basis of criteria reflecting academic quality and probable success in advanced study. These criteria are:

Undergraduate and (where applicable) graduate grades
Letters of recommendation
A personal statement outlining past accomplishments, professional objectives, special interests, and educational plans
Upload a resume or curriculum vitae (CV) to your application. Your resume or CV should include details about your education, employment, and internship history. Pertinent research experience should be included as well.

Please upload a brief personal statement describing your educational objectives, your experience, and why you're interested in the program. PhD applicants should also include which research areas they are interested in and the faculty they would like to work with. There is no required length or word limit for the statement.

One letter of recommendation is required to apply to the MS program. Two letters of recommendation are required to apply to the PhD program.
Letters are automatically requested when you enter recommenders' names and email addresses in your application. While we will accept letters from professional sources, we strongly prefer letters from professors acquainted with your academic interests, achievements, and abilities.
Copies of transcript(s) for all post-secondary schoolwork must be uploaded with your application for initial review. Upon an offer of admission, accepted applicants will be required to submit official transcripts and proof of degree(s).
