The Film Studies degree fosters critical engagement with cinema. Learners gain historical, theoretical, and cross-cultural frameworks to examine global films, developing skills to interpret cinematic art as cultural analysts. Administered by the Department of Media Study, this program draws many core courses from this department. The Film Studies curriculum is inherently interdisciplinary, with relevant classes offered across various departments including English, African American Studies, Communication, Sociology, Romance Languages and Literatures, Global Gender and Sexuality Studies, and the Center for the Americas. This program equips students with analytical tools to examine, interpret, and evaluate films. While film production courses are available as electives, students primarily interested in filmmaking might find the production track in Media Study more suitable. The Film Studies curriculum prepares graduates for careers as film critics, educators, or for advanced film-focused graduate studies.
