The Department of East Asian Studies provides two distinct Master's degree options: specialized Area Master's degrees and broader General Master's degrees. The Area Master's degrees allow specialization in either Chinese or Japanese studies, primarily preparing students for doctoral programs (while also serving as terminal degrees if desired). These programs typically require a thesis, except for linguistics students who may opt for an examination. The General Master's degrees offer flexibility to concentrate on China, Japan, or both regions, with students choosing between a thesis or departmental paper. This track is ideal for those not pursuing doctoral studies.
The University of Arizona's collaborative units - including SILLC, Eller College of Management, School of Journalism, and School of Government and Public Policy - collectively prepare tomorrow's global leaders by developing exceptional intercultural skills essential in today's interconnected world.
Professional M.A. students work closely with their Faculty Mentor and Graduate Studies Director (plus additional faculty as needed) to design customized Study Plans tailored to their unique objectives. Below is a sample Business Administration Emphasis Plan. Should course availability or individual academic/professional needs require adjustments, the Graduate Studies Director may approve modifications to this suggested framework on an individual basis.
