Our Master of Arts in Teaching English as a Second Language (MA TESL) program is tailored for both current and aspiring professionals in applied linguistics and TESL/TEFL education, providing an equal focus on theoretical foundations and practical application. The program collaborates with the Center for ESL and participates in the Graduate Interdisciplinary PhD in SLAT, while also providing an undergraduate specialization option for English majors.
The MA TESL curriculum prepares educators for teaching English to non-native speakers, blending theoretical knowledge, research methodologies, and hands-on teaching experience. Students gain comprehensive understanding of language acquisition theories, instructional methodologies, learning environments, and professional standards in the field.
Admission to the TESLMA program will be determined on a case-by-case basis. Admission requires an undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or above in relevant fields (e.g. in social sciences, humanities, and education, but especially English and foreign languages). International applicants whose native language is not English need a total TOEFL score of at least 550 pbt, or 79 ibt, or an IELTS 7 (no subject below 6).
