The Master of Arts in German program mandates completion of at least 33 semester hours of graduate-level coursework, available with thesis and non-thesis options. Participants must sustain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00 throughout their studies. The program features two specialization tracks: German literature or Germanic linguistics. The literature track involves seven literature courses (21 s.h.) alongside four linguistics courses (12 s.h.), while the linguistics track reverses this ratio with seven linguistics courses (21 s.h.) and four literature courses (12 s.h.).
A minimum of 24 semester hours must be completed within the German Department. Any external coursework for the M.A. requires prior authorization from the graduate advisor. Prior to taking the final examination, candidates must prove proficiency in a non-German foreign language equivalent to two years of college instruction or four years of high school study. This requirement can be satisfied either by presenting transcripts showing completion of relevant coursework with a 3.00 GPA or by passing a fourth-semester college-level examination administered by the respective language department.
A U.S. bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university, or an equivalent degree from another country as determined by the Office of Admissions with a minimum grade-point average (GPA) of 3.00.
