The English Literature Program's MA and PhD degrees offer a curriculum that equips students with analytical skills, diverse viewpoints, and historical context to comprehend contemporary issues. Our program examines the dynamic interactions between marginalized and mainstream perspectives, historical and modern contexts, and literary versus non-literary works. We incorporate groundbreaking, relevant, and varied concepts to tackle the pressing issues our students will confront.
The MA in English offers comprehensive graduate-level studies in English and American literature while laying the foundation for doctoral work. MA candidates must complete 30 graduate units (with at least 24 units, or 8 courses, in standard literature classes unless authorized by the Program Director), prove proficiency in a foreign language, and pass a comprehensive exam based on faculty-approved reading lists.
Our MA and PhD programs in English equip students for academic careers in teaching and research across higher education institutions. While the MA serves as both a stepping stone to the PhD and a standalone degree for advanced literary studies, the PhD specifically prepares graduates for university faculty positions while also supporting those pursuing careers outside academia.
Our distinguished faculty conducts pioneering research employing contemporary critical approaches across traditional literary fields. Each semester, graduate seminars frequently address innovative topics that bridge faculty research interests with evolving scholarly developments in the field.
