The Bachelor of Science in Geography with a Geographic Information Science concentration provides instruction in advanced GIS and geographic information systems technology (GIST) to meet the increasing global need for qualified geospatial experts. The curriculum includes classes in remote sensing, cartography, spatial modeling, and GIS applications for land evaluation, wildlife preservation, transportation, and social sciences. Students also develop abilities in mathematical and computational reasoning, problem-solving, and verbal and written communication. Those majoring in Geography with a GIS focus can take courses that build technical proficiency in GIS programming, project management, spatial data integration and management, and creating spatial data visualizations for print, digital, and mobile platforms.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Show understanding of fundamental physical geography concepts in climatology, biogeography, landforms, and/or water resources
Display capability to formulate research questions, critically assess data sources & biases, incorporate academic literature, & perform research using primary and/or secondary materials
Show proficiency in generating, refining, and analyzing graphical data to compare/contrast spatial patterns & arrangements
Identify the primary elements affecting global and regional climate across past, present, and future timeframes
Select and apply suitable geography techniques to establish an organized approach for analyzing environmental and societal issues and understand their individual and collective impacts
Demonstrate capacity for autonomous advanced critical thinking and synthesize, process, & convey geographic concepts, methods, & implementations through oral, written, & visual formats
Students must have high school equivalent to USA and entry requirements vary from country to country. International applicants whose primary language is not English, or who attended school in a non-English speaking country, regardless of citizenship, must prove English proficiency. English proficiency may be proven by one or more of the following:
