Atmospheric science encompasses diverse disciplines studying the physical and chemical characteristics and processes of Earth's atmosphere. Recent developments highlight how the atmosphere interacts with other Earth system components like land, oceans, and sea ice.

The UAF Geophysical Institute, International Arctic Research Center, and other university research centers maintain vigorous high-latitude atmospheric research programs involving faculty from biology, chemistry, physics, engineering, and other fields. Current atmospheric science investigations examine atmospheric chemistry and biogeochemistry, climate modeling, cloud and aerosol physics, mesoscale modeling, weather forecasting for aviation, and upper atmospheric phenomena (stratosphere and mesosphere). Researchers also explore ocean-atmosphere dynamics, meteorological processes, small-scale weather patterns, polar weather systems, radiation transfer, atmosphere-cryosphere interactions, and remote sensing technologies.
