The English department provides foundational courses in composition and literary studies, along with advanced classes covering literature, linguistics, creative writing, technical communication, and critical analysis. Students can pursue a two-year M.A. in literature, a three-year M.F.A. in creative writing, or a combined M.F.A./M.A. degree in creative writing and literature completed within three years. Teaching assistantships support all three programs. The M.A. program focuses on deepening literary knowledge and theoretical understanding, ideal for aspiring educators or doctoral candidates. The M.F.A., as a terminal degree, requires students to create a publishable thesis in poetry, fiction, drama, or creative nonfiction. The dual M.F.A./M.A. caters to those seeking both creative writing excellence through a thesis manuscript and rigorous literary scholarship for academic careers or Ph.D. preparation.
