The Master of Arts in Indigenous Studies focuses on Indigenous knowledge frameworks. This graduate program enables students from diverse academic backgrounds to deeply explore how Indigenous knowledge shapes today's world. Participants must show competency in working collaboratively with Indigenous communities throughout their academic journey. Doctoral students in Indigenous Studies will conduct interdisciplinary research spanning multiple UAF departments and practical applications. The program promotes global comparative studies with other Indigenous groups and prioritizes dissertation topics that address real-world concerns for Indigenous populations. Following an interdisciplinary Ph.D. structure, students are primarily based in their major advisor's department, with the advisor also serving as program faculty.
The curriculum revolves around six specialization areas: Indigenous research methodologies, traditional knowledge systems, educational approaches, language preservation, community leadership, and sustainable practices. Learners may concentrate on a single focus area or integrate multiple themes, working with their advisory committee to shape their academic path and research direction. Each student, in consultation with their committee, will craft a customized course of study that makes an original scholarly impact on practical applications within Indigenous scholarship.
