The University of Texas at Austin provides exceptional resources tailored for graduate students studying French and Italian. Its remarkable collections include the Carlton Lake archive featuring manuscripts and rare editions of modern French authors from Baudelaire to Beckett, Princess Bibesco's personal papers, the Artinian compilation of Guy de Maupassant works, and an extensive Surrealist archive of journals and original materials. For Italian studies, the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center houses prestigious collections (Ranuzzi, Aldine, Medici, Bodoni, Parsons, and Weinreb) containing medieval and Renaissance manuscripts, early printed books, plus numerous manuscripts from modern literary figures like Luigi Pirandello, Paolo Volponi, and Carlo Levi. The Blanton Museum of Art's Suida-Manning Collection stands among America's premier Renaissance and Baroque art collections, offering another unparalleled resource for graduate research. UT Austin's Italian Studies Graduate Program adopts an interdisciplinary approach, allowing students flexibility in coursework, research focus, academic specialization, and teaching preparation. While based in the Department of French and Italian, the program collaborates with faculty specializing in Italian Studies across the university, offering both Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy degrees, with the M.A. serving as preparation for doctoral studies rather than a final professional qualification.
